Technical requirements

For online participation in the 6th DeafIT Conference on 12th and 13th March 2021

For participants

Please note the following for smooth participation:

  • You use current supported operating systems (Windows 10, MacOS & Linux).
Have the latest browser version on your operating system (supported are: Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome & Apple Safari).
  • Have a stable, fast internet connection (preferably no WLAN or on your own responsibility; internet connection with at least 16MBit/s Down, i.e. it is important that a check on www.speedtest.net shows a value higher than 16MBit/s Down).
  • A display with at least HD resolution (1920×1080) is ideal.
For speech-based users, a loudspeaker or headphones on your end device is an advantage (desktop computer / laptop).

For speakers and interpreters

Please note the following for smooth participation:

  • You use current supported operating systems (Windows 10, MacOS & Linux).
  • Have the latest browser version (supported are: Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome & Apple Safari).
  • Have access to a stable, fast internet connection (preferably not WLAN; internet connection with at least 32MBit/s down and 10MBit/s up. In an emergency, the connection also works with 6MBit/Up, but please make sure that all other electronic devices are deactivated, such as a kettle that may be connected to Alexa (!?!)). Therefore, please make sure that a check of your transmission speed on www.speedtest.net can show at least these down/up values).
  • A display with at least HD resolution (1920×1080) is ideal. Please note that the use of 2 screens or 2 devices is recommended: one screen for the online conference and a separate screen for internal communication.
  • For speech-based users: Speakers or headphones on your end device (desktop computer / laptop).
  • For our speakers: An HD webcam (i.e. resolution: 1920×1080) is desirable. In exceptional cases, a 720p webcam resolution is also possible, but in this case please be sure to consult us in advance.
  • For our interpreters an HD webcam is mandatory (i.e. resolution: 1920×1080).
  • Please ensure that there is sufficient lighting! For a good image quality and thus for an optimal image for understanding (mouth image) for the hearing-impaired participants, it is particularly important that your face is properly illuminated from the front. Please also make sure to minimise the lighting in the background due to the high contrast resolution. This means darkening the windows as much as possible, ideally you have a plain coloured wall as a background. As visual transmission plays an important role at this conference, we urge you to explicitly refrain from using chroma keys and “gimmicks” that change your background.

If you have any further questions or problems, please send an email to the DeafIT team at info@deafit.org. We will be happy to help!
